What's your opinion on the importance of pair programming in software development?

I think it's actually really good for leveling up a junior developer really quickly. It's also good for spreading some productivity improvements. HOWEVER, it's hard for me to justify using pair programming a lot. It takes a lot of time from both developers. From my experience, it's usually slower than just having a single developer work on a task.
